Abstract

Fenugreek (menthi) has been a wonder crop used around the globe since ancient times for various health benefits. Menthi is used as an additive in spice blends and a flavouring agent in foods, beverages and its extract are also used in soap and cosmetics. Menthi plants are cultivated in the soil having high organic matter, Ph 6-7, and soil type of loamy or sandy loamy. It is planted in both the cropping seasons rabi and kharif in different part of India. The menthi seeds are also consumed raw as sprouts and used medicinally. Alkaloids, amino acids, saponins, steroidal saponins, flavonoid, fibres and lipids are some of the chemical components present in menthi. Menthi contains various essential nutrients which are beneficial for health and medication such as it reduces menopause symptoms, lowers the cholesterol level, fight against diabetes, prevent and treat kidney failure, and also treat various skin related complications. Along with health benefits it has some side effects. If a person having diabetes, asthma or allergic to peanuts the symptoms and side effect may increase after consumption of menthi. Taking the positive approach more lives could be saved and many diseases can be cured by the help of menthi with less side effect.
