Ajwain is an herbaceous herb belonging to family Apiaceae. Ajwain for its characteristic sweet smell and pungent taste is extensively used as a spice in Indian curries. Its seeds are used in small amounts for spicing multitudinous foods, as preservatives, in drug and in manufacture of perfumery. Due to its colorful chemical ingredients ajwain seeds are known for its numerous pharmacological properties like antiseptic, carminative, diuretic, anesthetic, antimicrobial, antiviral, nematicidal, antiulcer, antihypertensive, broncho-dilatory, antiplatelet and hepatoprotective as well as antihyperlipidemic effect. In Indian system of medicine, ajwain is administered for curing stomach diseases, a paste of persecuted fruits is applied externally for relieving bellyache pains and a hot and dry fomentation of ajwain fruit is applied on chest for asthma. This review provides an overview of the medicinal value and uses of ajwain in treating various diseases.
