Abstract

Peppermint (Mentha piperita, conjointly called M. balsamea Wild), is a natural hybrid mint, a cross between Watermint (M. aquatic) and Spearmint (M. spicata) with immense therapeutic uses. It is oldest known medicinal plant species, “Medicinal Plant of the Year 2004”, (Saller R, 2004) known as “heirba buena” meaning good herb. It is a medicinal plant that has received more attention from both food (flavoring agent from chewing gum to after dinner mints) and pharmaceutical industries because of it’s health benefits for human society. The plant, native to Europe and therefore the Middle East, is currently widespread in cultivation in several regions of the world. It is found wild often with it’s parent species. The plant species is a perennial herb, propagating through stolons and yield peppermint oil (extremely used for all the volatile oils) of commerce (used parts: leaf, whole plant). The targeted oil of peppermint encompasses a high menthol content and also contains menthone and menthyl esters, significantly menthyl acetate, menthofuran and 1, 8-cineol. It also contains little amounts of the many additional compounds including limonene, pulegone, caryophyllene and pinene. Peppermint oil as well as peppermint leaf has been used internally as an antispasmodic agent (upper gastrointestinal tract and bile ducts) and to treat irritable bowel syndrome, catarrh of the respiratory tract, and inflammation of the oral mucosa. Externally, peppermint oil has been used for myalgia and neuralgia. It may additionally act as a carminative, cholagogue, antibacterial, and secretolytic, and has a cooling action. Enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules (Colpermin) are used as an orally administered antispasmodic agent premedication in colonoscopy.
