Hippophae rhamnoides, a sea buckthorn species belonging to the family Elaeagnaceae is a wild plant grown in cold desert areas of India, China, Atlantic coasts of Europe, to northwestern Mongolia and central Europe and Asia. The plant berries, barks, leaves, roots and seeds have potent chemical constituents. This review deals with the study of morphological characteristics, geographical conditions of soil and climatic for harvesting and growth of sea buckthorn. The Sea buckthorn plants are spine scent shrub or small tree up to 10 m in height with rough brown bark, small leaves, male and female flower orange yellow in colour single oblong seeds. The plant possess chemical constituents with flavonoids, vitamins, minerals, etc. The medicinal activities of plant studied in this article includes potent antidiabetic, cardiovascular, anticancer, antioxidant, eye protective, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulating, dermatological effects, platelet aggregation, burns and wounds, radioprotective, antisebum secretion activity. From the study, it can be concluded that out of various other species of hippophae, H. rhamnoides possess prominent medicinal effect. Thus, extract of this wild shrub, Hippophae rhamnoides, will be beneficial for various pharmacological conditions.
