Clove [Syzygium (S.) aromaticum] oil is obtained from the clove tree Eugenia caryophyllata belonging to the family Myrtaceae after drying the flower buds. Clove is an aromatic plant extensively cultivated in tropical and subtropical countries. Clove trees are native to the Maluku Islands of Indonesia. However, they are also cultivated in other diverse regions of Madagascar, China, India, the West Indies, Tanzania, and Malaysia. Clove is a traditional spice used for various culinary uses and is well known for various pharmacological biological properties. It is rich in volatile compounds, phytochemicals, and antioxidants. Clove essential oil (CEO) has been widely used for various purposes such as in perfume, cosmetics, medicinal, flavoring, and food applications. The biological properties of CEO have germane importance in human health due to its antimicrobial, analgesic, antinociceptive, and antioxidant activity. Clove is purportedly known for its healing capacity in toothache, mouth, and throat inflammation. Clove oil has also known for its stimulating action and increasing blood circulation. The predominant compound of clove is eugenol while other important compounds contributing to therapeutic effects are eugenyl acetate, β-caryophyllene, α- humulene, isoeugenol, cinnamic acids and flavonoids. This review summarizes the essential biological activities of clove oil beneficial to human health including antinociceptive, anticancer, antimicrobial, antiviral, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-coagulant properties.
