Abstract

The genus Asparagus belongs to the Liliaceae family and possesses more than 20000 different species the pharmaceutical and ethnomedical properties of wild Asparagus species have been studied extensively in previous studies, In the current study, various aspects of the genus Asparagus have been discussed. The historical aspects and demographic distribution of asparagus have been discussed. From the information, it can be demonstrated that, at present, the species are scattered in different regions of Southern America, Asia, Eastern Africa and Northern America. Studies have demonstrated the different partition components and medicinal properties of Asparagus. Summarizing the information, the study has demonstrated that of Vitamin E and C, flavonoids glutathione, crude fibre, carbohydrate, and inorganic matter. The genus possesses antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antidiabetic properties and helps in boosting the immune system. There is around 2000+ species of the genus Asparagus. The study has also focused mainly on four main Asparagus species that are enriched in phytochemicals and these are Asparagus filicinus Burch, Asparagus africanus Lam, Asparagus officinalis L., Asparagus racemosus and Asparagus densiflorus.
