Spinach (Spinacia oleracea) is most widely recognised for being a nutrient dense leafy green, its many medical uses have diverted attention away from food. Spinach is a versatile medicinal herb that boasts a high dietary fibre content. Green leafy vegetables are the rich sources of essential minerals and vitamins. The natural compositions of such vegetables have huge importance in the field of cosmetology and treatment of various diseases. In the present work, Spinacia oleracea, belonging to Chenopodiaceae family, were analysed for basic nutrients in the diet with a view to ascertain its nutritional potentials variation according to geographical area. Essential vitamins, minerals, and bioactive substances are also abundant in it. The cardiovascular system is supported by dietary nitrates and betalipoic acid may have antidiabetic effects. A review of its phytochemicals, which include carotenoids, flavonoids, and polyphenols, indicates several beneficial health benefits.
