Abstract

Crop residue management (CRM) through conservation agriculture can improve soil productivity and crop yields by controlling soil organic matter (SOM) levels. The two main benefits of residue management are the improvement of near-soil organic matter (OM) and the promotion of nutrient cycling and retention. The large microbial biomass and activity near the soil surface acts as a sink for essential nutrients for plant growth and improves the stability of the structure for further penetration. In addition, changes in the distribution of nutrients in the soil profile can alter the chemical and physical properties of the soil. Improving soil carbon sequestration through the development of CRM is a good option for reducing the environmental impact of agriculture. Ideally, CRM applications should be chosen to maximize crop yields with minimal environmental impact. Crops of the same crops are great resources that not only provide food for the next crop, but also improve soil, water, and air quality. The management and control of cultivated crops can provide economic benefits for many producers and more importantly, society. Improved residue management and reduced tillage practices should be encouraged for their beneficial role in reducing soil degradation and increasing soil fertility. Therefore, farmers are responsible for making management decisions that allow them to improve crop quality and reduce environmental impact. It takes the multidisciplinary and collaborative efforts of many researchers to develop a consensus in specific areas for CRM applications to reduce environmental impact while improving agricultural performance and sustainability.
