The textile industry is the second largest sector of global trade market and at the same time a major source of pollution also. The statistics available till date regarding the amount of pollution is alarming and indicative of some approaching unfortunate consequences. The situation requires immediate attention. Sustainable, environment friendly alternatives to present day textile production materials and processes are the need of the hour. Here, some recent advances in eco-friendly textile fibres using plants and micro-organisms have been discussed. Bio- fabrics are made by fibres sourced from biological sources which can be plants or micro-organisms such as bacteria, yeast, algae and fungi root structures.
