Abstract

Pregnant women exhibit several common expectations that lead to satisfaction and happy delivery. Most pregnant women have some common expectations in food, care, and childbirth. Understanding their expectations helps fulfill their needs and desires to overcome stress, anxiety, and depression during pregnancy. This study aimed to describe and women's expectations during the antenatal period by selecting the samples from the Coimbatore district through the purposive method. A total of 60 antenatal women were chosen for the present study with their consent. A self-constructed questionnaire was used to assess antenatal women's expectations, consisting of 38 statements with 9 areas, namely partners support, prenatal counseling parental support, in-law-support, finance, health, foods cravings, gender preference, gender preferences, type of delivery. The results revealed that the nuclear family predicted higher expectations during pregnancy than joint family, and second-trimester antenatal women predicted higher expectations. Still, we do not find any significant difference. Concerning living areas, antenatal women who are living in urban area who had love marriages found to have higher expectations during pregnancy period. On the other hand, low expectations were revealed from the rural and arranged married antenatal women. This study proves that women need better support from the family and partner to fulfil her needs with respect to her feelings, emotions, childbirth and postnatal period.
