Abstract

Domestic violence which mostly occurs within the confines of the home not only affects the physical, emotional and psychological health of the victims but it also leaves a scar on children’s delicate minds who also become the secondary victims of violence. Children who are exposed to domestic violence experience irritability, inadequate sleep, loneliness, immaturity, poor language development, reduced concentration, aggressiveness, antisocial behaviors, anxiety, depression, violence behaviors, low frustration tolerance, eating problems, and being passive or withdrawn. Such children may also resort to practising violent behaviours later on in life or themselves become a victim of violence. This chapter throws light on the hazardous effect of domestic violence on children. It elaborates on the physical and psychological ramifications of violence on children’s growth and overall development supporting it with theoretical considerations. It also examines the short-term and long-term consequences on children exposed to domestic violence.
