Abstract

The science of medicine is as old as mankind, and man has attempted these miseries in curing disease by finding its cause has helped in the evolution of different medical streams since ancient times. Ayurveda the oldest existing medical science existed since the Vedic period. The Vedic literature, ancient scriptures, Ayurvedic literature are the roots for existing modern medical sciences. Acharyas like Punarvasu Atreya, Agnivesha, Charaka, Kashyapa, Dhanwantari, and Bhela were the prominent authors of Ayurvedic literature, who stressed the spiritual philosophy and medical ethics as part of mainstream healing practices. The great works done by these Acharya’s towards the medical literature consists of scientific research, ethical and moral values, patient examinations and experimentations serve as reference works for the students and practitioners of Ayurveda. Ayurveda has given importance to the ethics and code of conduct and has laid down certain rules and guidelines for the practitioners, patients, nurses, attenders, and other persons involved in the medical profession. This present study highlights the ethical guidelines related to the medical profession as described in Ayurvedic literature.
