Abstract

Snake-bites can cause encephalopathic changes in brain. We hereby describing the imaging findings in case of snake-bite induced hypoxic encephalopathy. A 8 year-old male child was bitten on his middle finger of right hand by a snake, when he was playing on ground. The bite rendered the victim unconscious, drowsy with generalized convulsions for which he got admitted and intubated. During this he was treated with polyvalent anti-snake venom. After mild improvement in his clinical conditions he underwent MRI study for brain, which showed generalized global hypoxic encephalopathic changes with brain oedema. He then started on steroids, mannitol and IV antibiotics. In few days he started improving in his generalized conditions but has residual weakness in all four limbs. Hypoxia induced encephalopathy is rare complication following snake-bite. MRI helps in the early diagnosis for early management of disease. But many a times when treatment is delayed there is residual neuroparalytic deficits.
