Abstract

Scab of apple is one of the most serious diseases. Among the economically most important fruit crops in Kashmir and other parts of India affected by scab disease are apples (Malus domestica). This disease was first reported from Sweden as early as 1819. The powdery mildew disease of apple is commonly occurs on orchards of apple in northern India. It occurs in all apple producing regions of the world. In India, this disease is most commonly occurs in Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh. Historically, the fire blight of apple disease was first discovered in 1817. There was relatively higher fire blight incidence in apple orchards as a result of a mid-summer hurricane, which damaged apple trees and increased the susceptibility to fire blight. The presently this disease is present most of the apple growing areas of the world. It is caused by bacterium Erwinia amylovora, is a serious bacterial disease of fruit trees. Cedar-apple rust is a common disease of apple. The fungus that causes the disease, Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae, is unusual because it must spend a phase of its life cycle as a parasite on Juniperus species, such as red cedar or ornamental junipers. Cedar-apple rust can be severe on apple. Infections of apple fruit result in lower fruit quality and early fruit drop. Leaf spots may cause early defoliation, especially during dry summers.
