Abstract

The identification and management of diseases in pulse crops has been described in this chapter. Pulses including chickpeas, pigeon peas, mungbeans, and urdbeans are very popular. Pulse crops are frequently alternated with cereals to maximise economic returns, decrease nitrogen fertiliser consumption and provide a premium source of plant-based protein. From seedling until maturity, pulses are susceptible to around 19 diseases. In India, for many years the only source of protein for the underprivileged has been regarded pulses. The most widely cultivated pulse crops in India are the chickpea, also known as bengalgram (Cicer arietinum), pigeonpea, also known as arhar (Cajanus cajan), greengram, also known as mungbean (Vigna radiata), blackgram, also known as urdbean (Vigna mungo), lentil, also known as masur (Lens culinaris), fieldpea, also known as (Phaseolus vulgaris). Pulses crop are mainly sensitive to soil borne pathogen such as Fusarium spp.
