Abstract

Climate change poses a significant challenge to global agriculture, influencing plant disease dynamics in complex and multifaceted ways. This chapter provides an in-depth analysis of how rising temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather events impact plant diseases and their management. It explores case studies across diverse crops, including wheat rust diseases, tomato late blight, coffee leaf rust, grapevine leaf roll disease, potato early blight, coffee berry borer, apple scab, and banana Panama disease, highlighting the specific ways climate change affects pathogen development, spread, and severity. The chapter delves into mechanisms through which climate change exacerbates plant diseases, such as enhanced pathogen growth due to warmer temperatures and altered disease vector dynamics. It further discusses adaptation and mitigation strategies, including predictive models for disease forecasting, integrated pest management (IPM), and the development of resistant plant varieties. Emphasis is placed on sustainable agricultural practices, policy interventions, and community engagement to enhance resilience against plant diseases. Emerging trends and technologies, such as precision agriculture and genome editing, are also examined for their potential to improve disease management in the context of a changing climate. The chapter underscores the need for continued research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and adaptive strategies to safeguard global food security and agricultural sustainability. By integrating climate science with plant pathology, this chapter aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the challenges and solutions related to plant diseases in an era of climate change, offering valuable insights for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners in the field of agriculture.
