Work related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) are a group of painful disorders of muscles, tendons and nerves. Mostly the packing in pharmaceutical industry is done by women manually. The process of packing involves inserting silica gel, tablets and foam, capping, weighing, tagging, shrink wrapping and collating. Repetitive movements of the upper limbs and awkward postures are very common. While carrying out the job activities these women had to twist to communicate. A number of stages required the operators to twist to collect or move the vials and transfer materials. There are two aspects of body posture that contribute to injuries. The first relates to the position of the upper limb that performs the actual task. The other postural aspect that contributes to work related musculoskeletal disorders is a fixed position of the neck and the shoulders. Prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders was identified as the dependent variable of the present investigation. The independent variables of the study included were upper arm position, lower arm position, wrist position, wrist twist position, arm & wrist position, neck position, trunk position, legs position, neck-trunk &legs position and body posture. The data was collected through structured interview schedule. Statistical analysis of the data was done by using different statistical methods. An attempt was made in the present investigation to identify risk factors from the results of the study and proposed appropriate ergonomic intervention strategies through scientific literature search. These ergonomic interventions included were engineering controls, administrative controls and personal or behavioural controls.
