Empowerment is the expansion of assets and capabilities of poor people to participate in, negotiate with, influence, control, and hold accountable institutions that affect their lives and the decisions which affect them. Empowerment theory focuses on processes that enable participation; enhance control through shared decision making; and create opportunities to learn, practice, and increase skills. It recognizes the fact that youths lack skills, knowledge, experience, right equipment or resources to achieve this and organizes technical and soft skills training for the young people to thread a path in agribusiness. Agricultural youth empowerment therefore provides opportunities for underemployed young people, especially in rural areas, giving them the chance to establish innovative agricultural enterprises and improve their agribusiness skills. The study highlighted areas of empowerment in agriculture, efforts of governments and private institutions in empowering youths in agriculture/agro-allied enterprises in Nigeria, benefits of youths empowerment programmes, strategies and models of youths’ empowerment in agricultural programmes and challenges of youths’ empowerment in agriculture. There is need for the government and its agencies to support the youth farmers with adequate incentives that will motivate them to participate actively in agricultural development programmes; and also the need for the various programme managements to address youth areas of interest in agriculture so as to enhance their participation in extension programmes.
