Abstract

Challenges in agriculture are plenty and farmers, throughout the world, are battling with erratic rainfall, extreme weather conditions, lack of proper supply chain and increased cost of living. To overcome these odd situations, countries like India need to have supportive agricultural policies to sustain and secure the food safety and ensure quality food for everyone. Increased population and decreased arable areas due to urbanization is one of the main challenges to feed the country. These limiting factors need to be emphasized with newer technology adoptions in agriculture with blend of IT applications and cutting down the super normal profit of inter mediary in the agricultural supply chain. India being the youngest country in the world needs to retain its youth in agriculture to solve the problem of unemployment and need to transform agriculture into a commercial activity through innovation. Realizing the importance of youth in farm development, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has started a program on Attracting and Retaining Youth in Agriculture (ARYA) during 2015-16. Under this programme, innovative measures are being taken to attract the rural youth, who are under the age of 35 years, in agriculture to provide income-generating opportunities and engage them in agriculture. There are several young minds coming out with the newer projects by starting up their own enterprises in agriculture and allied sectors.
