Food is the basic need of everyone. Adulterated food has low nutritional value which can lead to various food borne or nutrient deficiency diseases. This creates challenges for the government. So the Government of India has promulgated Prevention of Food Adulteration act (PFA) and Fruit Product Order (FPO).These orders came into effect during 1955 and covered food standards, steps of sample collection and analysis, power of officers and penalties. So many amendments (over 200) took place. It sets the parameters for food additives, coloring matter, preservatives, packaging and labeling. In addition FPO made efforts to ensure that the food should be processed, manufactured, packed and stored under safe and hygienic conditions and accordingly facilitated to the people. The main intention of these acts is to curb the adulteration activities in the society.
