Abstract

Medicinal plants have traditionally occupied an important position in rural and tribal lives of India and are considered as one of the most important sources of medicines since the dawn of human civilization. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 80 per cent of the populations in developing countries depend on traditional medicine for their primary health care needs. A wide range of agroclimate, altitude and latitude has bestowed a rich diversity of medicinal plants grown in different parts of our country. One such a well recognized crop is C. forskohlii. This crop can be cultivated in wide geographic range between the latitudes 8º and 31º N, in subtropical and warm climates of the lesser Himalayas from Shimla eastward to Bhutan and hills of Central India, the Deccan Plateau, Eastern Plateau, rain shadow regions of the Western and Eastern hills. Coleus forskohlii is a herbaceous, pubescent, aromatic species with annual stems and perennial rootstock, growing 45-60 cm tall and only known natural source of. In addition, minor diterpenoids viz., deacetylforskolin, 9-deoxyforskolin, 1,9-deoxyforskolin, 1,9-dideoxy-7-deacetylforskolin and four other diterpenoids have been reported to be present in the tuberous roots of C. forskohlii the blood pressure lowering and antispasmodic effects of extracts of the roots of C. forskohlii were reported by many workers. Forskolin is used for the treatment of eczema, asthma, psoriasis, cardiovascular disorders and hypertension, where decreased intracellular cAMP level is believed to be a major factor in the development of the disease process.
