Abstract

The term ‘polycrisis’ is used for describing a complex set of interconnected challenges which are faced by an individual, communities, and countries. The term ‘polycrisis’ was first coined by the United Nations in 2015 to define the interconnected crises of poverty, environmental degradation, and political instability, which is a global phenomenon and has serious and extensive consequences on physical, mental and economic wellbeing of an individual and communities across the world. It is a growing concern because of its negative impacts on individual and communities, as well as of its increasing complexity of the challenges which it relates with. These crises range from economic downturns, social upheavals, environmental degradation, to public health crises such as COVID-19. This chapter discusses the causes of polycrisis and its associated health risks, as well as its potential solutions and strategies to alleviate the burden of this global challenge and also it highlights the phenomenon that intensifies the vulnerabilities and inequalities which exist in society. It also emphasizes on addressing polycrisis requires a holistic approach that reflects the interdependence of the crises and their root causes. One of the significant challenge in addressing polycrisis is that solving one crisis may inadvertently worsen another. For instance, tackling the economic fallout of the pandemic could lead to increased social inequality or environmental damage. Polycrisis underscores the need for transformative changes in our economic, social and political systems, while these changes requires a long-term commitment and sustained effort as they are crucial for building a more resilient and sustainable world.
