Melioidosis is an infectious disease mainly seen in tropical climates. The infection is caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. Most cases are known to be seen in Southeast Asia and northern Australia. Some imported cases have been seen in tourists, soldiers, and immigrants returning from endemic areas. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) declared B. pseudomallei as an agent for biological warfare and terrorism, since then it has caught much attention.
