Abstract

Data privacy is an essential human right in healthcare, but it is often neglected in the age of digital health. The pros and cons of using data to help patients while also ensuring that their personal health information is protected are examined in this chapter. While health data can be used to track and fight diseases and identify food-borne illnesses, among other issues, the use of personal health data also raises significant concerns about privacy and security. This chapter provides a review of the current state of data privacy in healthcare, including the legal and ethical frameworks that govern data use, the risks and benefits of health data sharing, and the technological solutions that are being developed to enhance data privacy and security. It highlights the importance of adopting a holistic approach to data privacy that considers the needs of patients, healthcare providers, researchers and policymakers. It examines the challenges and opportunities associated with balancing patient privacy and public health needs, including the impact of data privacy regulations on healthcare innovation and patient outcomes. It argues that effective data privacy policies and practices must be developed and implemented at all levels of the healthcare system, from individual organizations to national and international regulatory bodies and concludes by calling for a continued focus on the development of innovative technologies and policies that balance the need to protect patient privacy with the public health benefits of data sharing. In order to achieve this balance, it is essential that all stakeholders in the healthcare system work together to create a culture of data privacy and security that values transparency, accountability and respect for patient rights 1.
