Advertising is the practice of drawing customer attention towards a product or service. It draws attention, informs target audience about a product or service, triggers sell and does much more. Advertising is a major tool of promotion mix that uses various appeals to promote products and services to target audiences. Among the various appeals used to promote products and services, endorsement appeal is one such appeal that is actively used by organizations today. Endorsement appeal attempts to persuade people by using celebrities or credible people to endorse their products. The idea with the endorsement strategy is to convince consumers that the people they trust and admire use a certain product so consumers should too use them. Two such endorsers are celebrities and women. Celebrity endorsement also known as celebrity branding or celebrity advertising is a marketing strategy that uses a celebrity’s fame and image to promote a brand or product. Celebrity endorsement helps increase sales in the short term and brand awareness in the long term. Celebrity branding can be a powerful strategy to differentiate a company from that of its competitors and get edge in a highly competitive market. Women as endorsers are portrayed in a substantive way in a substantive manner in the advertisements of cement, steel or even scooters etc. which yet continues to be male dominated. Women are held a combination of beauty and intelligence and this combination have been demonstrated in the case of innumerable advertisement models who have won several beauty pageants over the years. The chapter highlights the necessity of advertising as a tool in promotion, the various advertising appeals with focus on the endorsement appeal and how celebrities and women are used as valuable endorsers in advertising. The primary purpose however, of this chapter is to highlight the role of women as endorsers in advertising and the changing role and status of women in endorsing various products and brands in advertising.
