Abstract

Night blooming cereus or dragon fruit (Hylocereus undatus) is a species of family Cactaceae and is the most cultivated species in the genus. It is used both as an ornamental climber and as a fruit crop-the white-fleshed Pitahaya or Dragon fruit. It is a Fast-Growing climbing plant which requires a vertical pole support to grow on and then a ring to fall like an umbrella. Dragon fruit a recently introduced super fruit in Indian market. It is getting tremendous popularity among growers because of its attractive fruit color and mouthwatering pulp with edible black seed imbedded inside the pulp, nutraceutical value, excellent export potential and highly remunerative in nature as produces yield from 14-16 months after planting of stem cutting and yield up to 20 years with long crop cycle from May-December in different flushes in each and every year. It is also a part of urban horticulture because of its beautiful nocturnal showy white flowers which can be used in moon garden. The fruits are having good taste, sweet, crispy, reach in anti-oxidants and liked by the many Indians. Dragon fruit is also an essential source of betacyanin which serves as a red/purple pigment with antioxidative properties. The academic bearing of this cactus is about 15 to 20 years and this can be manipulated by providing better growing conditions and also nutritional support.
