Broad bean is one of the oldest grown vegetable crops and third most important feed grain legume in the world. So, it is grown for human as well as animal consumption both. It is highly nutritive food item consumed either as fresh seeds or dried seeds. Broad beans have been suggested as good source of protein and also as an alternative to soybean. Dry seeds contain protein up to 35%. It is widely cultivated in temperate areas and in the tropics, subtropics and arid areas as a cool season crop. This species is cultivated as stock feed (as mature seed, hay or silage) and as a vegetable. This vegetable crop is cultivated for the slightly immature seeds which are cooked fresh or processed. In some arid and tropical areas, the dried mature seeds are stored for use in the winter and other seasons when fresh vegetables are in short supply. Dry seeds are cooked, canned or frozen. It is also known as Fake meat because it contains high protein and fibre content. It is hardy plant, can withstand temperature as low as 4 ℃. The plants contain floral nectaries in the leaf axils, which provide floral resources to pollinators and beneficial insects. Broad bean is cultivated on small scale in northern states of India such as Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Kashmir, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, etc.
