Abstract

Spice adds flavor to food items. India is the largest producer and exporter of spices. At present, India produces 1.52mt of spices annually. Conventionally spices are grown as monocrop in majority of the areas, which is prone to various biotic and abiotic stresses. To overcome this, alternative cropping systems need to be adopted. Different types of cropping systems commonly adopted for growing spices are monoculture, multiple cropping, sequential cropping, multi-tier system, intercropping, crop rotation, etc. Compared to monoculture, other systems ensure higher returns and safeguards against various hazards. However, management of spice-based multiple cropping systems pose operational challenges as each individual component requires different cultural as well as postharvest operations. Further, management practices vary depending on the location and agro-climatic condition. All-in-all suitable management practices for the spice-based cropping system need to be devised based on sound research and growers and consumers needs.
