Abstract

One of the major determinant of the change in disease burden over the next two decades in India is the rapidly ageing population. The proportion of people aged 60 and older will exceed that of people aged 0-14 by 2042 in India. (United Nations Population Division, 2008). Successful ageing means an active engagement with life leading to low risk of disease. Maintaining health promoting behaviors is key objective of preventive medicine in elderly and it includes complimentary, alternative and integrative medicine (CAIM) interventions e.g. Yoga. A concept of yoga for healthy ageing is emerging in the field of geriatrics and gerontology. Yoga has a wide range of benefits in physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual dimensions of life. This ancient tradition has resurfaced as most popular exercise program around the world with focus on yoga research and increase understanding of its impact on the body. Yogic lifestyle, diet, attitudes and practices help in strengthening positive health. New studies suggest that doing yoga regularly can slow physical aging and the harmful impact of stress at the cellular and DNA level. It normalizes the perception of stress and optimizes the reaction to it. These studies also deepen current knowledge of yoga’s effects on health among older adults generally.
