Abstract

Yoga is an essential part of Physical Education, which is evident from the fact that physical education in schools and colleges include yoga in their curriculum. This has arisen from the fact that yoga contributes towards the development of various physical, physiological and psychological faculties which have contributed towards health, fitness and sports performance. A wide array of studies on yoga and physical education and sports have been conducted which have given positive results regarding the contribution of yoga to physical education and sports. This study is an attempt to add another dimension to research, and find out the impact of different yoga practices on psychological, motor as well as skill performance variables such as depth perception, anxiety, speed, balance, agility and dribbling and ball control skills in basketball and hockey. For this study college girls were selected from both basketball and hockey games and divided into control and experimental groups. The experimental groups underwent a 6 weeks yoga intervention programme. Tests were conducted pretest and posttest to analyse the effect of the intervention. It was found that there was significant differences in speed, agility, depth perception, anxiety, and the skills adopted for the study. This study confirms the positive effect of yoga on sports skills and psychological and motor components and recommends that the duration of intervention could be increased and this study extended to other areas of physical education and sports.
