Abstract

The demand for organic fruits and vegetables has increased as per-capita income of people and health consciousness among them have improved. Organic pineapples grown in Lakhipur Sub-Division of the Cachar district of Assam are well-known for their sweetness and juiciness. The sugar content of the pineapples is between 16 and 18 percent, which is a record high for pineapples cultivated in North-East India. The pineapple growers of the area follow natural, traditional and organic methods of cultivation. Though Lakhipur is a remote, hilly and rural terrain located in the southern part of Assam that lacks infrastructural and marketing facilities, yet the pineapple growers have traversed the domestic market and reached the global market. Therefore, exploring the marketing strategies of the pineapple growers in Lakhipur is an interesting domain to be studied. Such an analysis might provide a path to globalize several other agricultural products that are grown in abundance but in remote areas. The study uses McCarthy’s 4Ps marketing mix to analyse the management strategies of the pineapple growers with a focus on the constraints that have been faced by the concerned growers.
