Abstract

Soil acidity is a natural and induced chemical condition of soils that having pH value of less than 5.5 for most of the year. Acidic soils were associated with a number of toxicities (Aluminum) as well as deficiencies (Molybdenum) and other plant growth limiting conditions. High rainfall, acidic parent material, type of vegetation are the natural causes of soil acidification. Soil acidification is a potentially serious land degradation topic. Soil acidification will have a most important influence on agricultural productivity and sustainable farming systems and acidification can also extend into subsoil layers have serious problems for plant root development. Plant tolerance to acidic soils is useful to increase yields, and diversifying the production systems on the acid soils. Using of nitrate based products for the source of nitrogen and avoiding ammonium-based products and reducing the nitrate leaching will decrease the acid addition to the soils. Lime pelleting and inoculation of some legume seeds will reduce the acidic soil associated infertility factors cost effectively. It is highlighted that the simple technology of liming to acidic soils to increase soil pH is a poor remedy for managing the acid soils. A broad view of the many management options should be taken.
