Energy is one of the most valuable inputs in production agriculture. It is invested in various forms such as farm machines, human labour, animal draft, chemical fertilizer, pesticides, herbicides, electrical, etc. The amount of energy used in agricultural production, processing and distribution should be significantly high in order to feed the expanding population and to meet other social and economic goals. The major objectives of energy management are 1) To achieve and maintain optimum energy procurement and utilization, throughout the crop duration 2) To minimize energy costs/waste without affecting production & quality 3) To avoid drudgery for labours 4) To minimize environmental effects Energy Audit is defined as “the verification, monitoring and analysis of use of energy including submission of technical report containing recommendations for improving energy efficiency with cost benefit analysis and an action plan to reduce energy consumption” according to Energy Conservation Act, 2001. In future, energy is the most dependable source for crop production because of non availability of labours and for that, we need to analyse energy required for each operation and hence, energy auditing is the important tool.
