Plant Kingdom comprises of roughly 500,000 plant species which are found worldwide, of which just one has been discovered as medicinal plant. Many medicinal plants has been recorded in past. Of all other medicinal plants Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi) is well-known by everyone thanks to it's uncountable benefits. Ocimum sanctum is an annual, adaptogenic herb belonging to the family Lamiaceae. It's commonly called Holy Basil and Tulsi. It’s native to the Indian subcontinent and also found worldwide as a vascular plant. Ayurveda addresses it's target healthy lifestyle practices and regular consumption of adaptogenic herbs. Among all the herbs used within Ayurveda, Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) is preeminent and research also confirming about it's beneficial effects. There’s mounting evidence that Tulsi can address physical, chemical, metabolic and psychological stress through a novel combination of pharmacological actions (Khanna N, Bhatia J, 2003, Gupta SK, Prakash J, Srivastava S, 2002). Tulsi has been found to shield organs and tissues against chemical stress from industrial pollutants and heavy metals, and physical stress from prolonged work up, ischemia, physical restraint and exposure to cold and excessive noise (Pandey Govind, Madhuri S, 2006). Tulsi has also been shown to counter metabolic stress through normalization of blood sugar, vital sign and lipid levels, and psychological stress through positive effects on memory and cognitive function and thru its anxiolytic and anti-depressant properties (William son, Evans, 1996). Further studies are required to explore more medicinal benefits of Tulsi.
