Epipremnum aureum (Golden Pothos) is a naturally occurring vine that shows mottled yellow-marble foliage. It is a vascular plant that abundantly produces greenery which is used as a decorative plant in tropical regions of the world. Epipremnum aureum species belongs to the family Araceae, native to Moorea in the Society Islands of French Polynesia. The Arum family (Araceae) plants are commonly called aroids since they bear calcium oxalate crystals and toxic proteins. The plant species mainly grow in temperate regions but are also widely distributed in the tropical as well as sub-tropical forests of the world. Epipremnum aureum has various common names such as money plant, golden pothos, ivy arum, marble queen, jade plant, and hunter’s robe. It is also named devil’s ivy because it bears green leaves and cannot wilt even in dark environment conditions. Money plants serve as the most popular ornamental houseplants known for bringing good luck and fortune. According to NASA researchers, the money plant is primarily used in households as a natural air purifier. It absorbs the negative radiations and impurities from the atmosphere to keep the surrounding air clean and healthy for living organisms. The aqueous and alcoholic extracts from Epipremnum aureum from phytochemical screening and anti-diabetic activity investigation in rats discovered the presence of secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, tannins, saponins, terpenoids, and flavonoids. Since money plants can well adapt to temperate and tropical climatic regions, they prove effective to treat fluoride-contaminated water. The water physicochemical analysis of money plants shows that it can remove toxic heavy metals and anionic contaminants such as fluoride, chlorides, sulfates, etc. from contaminated water. Epipremnum aureum plays an important role in phytoremediation for the removal of cobalt and cesium. The plant species possess antimicrobial activity for protection against many bacterial strains. E. aureum species are also known to possess anti-malarial, anti-tuberculosis, antioxidant, anti-cancerous and wound healing properties. It shows anti-termite activity for controlling pests and insects. Moreover, the beneficial properties of the money plant can be helpful to mankind in many ways.
