Abstract

The annual plant spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) is a member of the Chenopodiaceae family. The plant responds to temperature and photoperiod by producing a tightly packed rosette of leaves and bolts (i.e., a seed stalk). The presence of biological tannins and phenolic active phytochemicals such alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, glycosides, and terpenoids makes the entire plant valuable from a medicinal standpoint. It utilised in traditional medicine for a variety of therapeutic benefits. It is used to treat conditions such as diabetes, leprosy, asthma, lung inflammation, urinary issues, joint problems, thirst, sore throat, scabies, vomiting, ringworm, painful eye, cold, sneezing, fever, and illnesses connected to the brain and heart. Secondary metabolites with potential for both prevention and treatment in medicine were discovered through phytochemical screening. Essential Amino Acids are the primary chemical components of spinach. The richest source of carotenoids, beta-carotene, and lutein may be found in leaves, which also contain almost all vitamins. Carotene is the source of vitamin A. They are one of the finest sources of iron and include nearly all the minerals. In reality, by supplying the amino acid components of protein that are lacking in cereals, green vegetables when consumed with cereals enhance the protein quality of the former. According to a study, the molecular mechanisms through which spinach's non-essential phytochemicals and bioactives, such as glycolipids and thylakoids, impart their health advantages, with a focus on the functional qualities of spinach in cell culture, animals, and humans.
