Abstract

Salinity of cultivable land is a growing global concern that has been continuously affecting the growth, yields of major cultivated crops as well as plants. There is a rapid increase in salt affected areas due to insufficient rainfall, foul irrigation system, water contamination resulting into elevated levels of salts in the soil. Therefore there is the need to enhance crop productivity by improving crop adaptation, for which scientist have been carrying out conventional breeding method for past decades but due to certain limitations like time consumption, reproductive barrier, transfer of undesirable gene, need for “green to gene revolution” came into existence. Whole genome sequencing, proteomics and metabolic analysis of different crop plants under abiotic stress has led scientist to identify single gene, different groups of gene involved in stress tolerance. This present study gives insights on expression of incorporated gene in salt sensitive plants, establishment of ion transporters, compartmentalization, overexpression of certain proteins, enzymes, antioxidants leading to salt tolerance. Exploiting the functional genomics and bioinformatics studies paved the way in understanding the relationship between genotype and phenotype of an organism suffering from environmental stress thus future work on different gene, proteins, enzymes involved will give an idea to develop a better transgenic plant against biotic and abiotic stress. Moreover we should demonstrate cultivating more of halophytes to create a “saline agriculture” in terms of resource.
